Strength Training is not just about lifting weights. Recruiting the right tye of muscle fibres is important. The strength trainer's physique has a different look to that of a body builder although they both lift weights. The body builder generally looks like he has larger muscles, but is actually weaker than the strength trainer.
To gain strength, you will need to build muscle.
To gain more muscle you will need to:

Muscle balance as mentioned in the BodyBuilding Section also applies here. Strength training primarily involves lifting an extremely heavy load for a shorter period, you are subjecting your body to a huge physical challenge, so therefore it is still extremely important that you don't favour the other 8 muscle groups. This will almost certainly lead to injury with strength training.
If you get the repetition range wrong, you will look more like a bodybuilder and not acquire the strength that you want.
You will also need advice with regard to your nutritional requirements. If you are going to get strong, you will need to eat correctly.
